Tweaking #8
Posted on February 27, 2009
When I was in High school I played baseball. The talent level was a high one, especially in the class above me. My sophomore year proved to be one of the best seasons for a particular Junior. I will refer to this Junior as #8. #8 had a tremendous year at the plate. He hit well over .400 while setting a school record for batting average. The stage was set for a senior year to remember, but that is when the “tweak” reared its’ ugly head. The head coach decided he could make #8 a better hitter, so he decided to change his batting stance. Coach “tweaked” this and “tweaked” that while keeping #8 batting average under .200 throughout his senior year. Why blog about the ruination of #8’s batting average some 15 years later? I am glad you asked.
I believe the previous historical account is a great illustration of the detrimental approach to ministry that I recently heard Josh McDowell promoting at the Georgia Baptist Evangelism Conference. He repeatedly claimed that ministers of the Gospel needed only to “tweak” our presentation of Truth. He claimed that Truth in itself is not capable of anything. Truth was to be presented in a particular way to be effective, although he never shared the particular way that would work. I believe the “tweaking” already taking place is why we are in the spiritual drought we currently find ourselves. Â
“Tweaking” has been taking place ever since the GenXers came along, by the way I am one. We have been coddled to the point we believe that the world revolves around us. We are as self centered as any other generation, but somehow we convinced those older than us we are deserving of special attention. Josh McDowell has bought the lie and is now sharing it with his peers. The Gospel is being ”tweaked” in order to reach a generation and following generations by making it palatable. The Gospel has never been and will never be palatable. Â
“The Gospel is the power of God”. The Word of God is sufficient. The only “tweaking” that needs to take place is that the men of God in our denomination need to relocate their backbones and preach the Word.Â
I am just narrow minded enough to believe that God’s Word when preached according to the will of God, by the power of God is able to accomplish the purpose of God.
Georgia Baptist, rise up, go back to the Book, and do not “tweak” the Truth! It is time we trust God and quit thinking He needs our help. I pray you are with me.
Now let’s go and change this world with the Power of God!
